An agent of the Holland Land Company, Cazenovia was an ideal location to build a community. Drawn by the natural resources-the lake, the land, the stream, and the opportunity, he announced “Here I pitch my tent, here I build my village." At a time when the American frontier was rapidly evolving, Lincklaen’s keen business sense and civic-minded spirit propelled him to invest his energies in transforming a budding settlement into a vibrant town. His efforts in planning the layout, establishing key community institutions, and promoting cultural growth set the stage for what Cazenovia would become.
An agent of the HLC, Lincklaen served under Theophilus Cazenove. In recognition of his employer, Lincklaen bestowed the honor of naming the new community after him- Cazenovia.

Upon its opening in November 1836, the Cazenovia Republican reported "An establishment of the kind has long been a desideratum in our village, which it is thought will now be effectually supplied. The building is spacious, durably constructed and elegantly furnished, and will bear comparison with any one of the kind in any country village." In need of a name befitting it's position and importance, it was named The Lincklaen House.
