The holidays are my favorite time to grab my camera because it’s not about perfect poses—it’s about real moments. I love documenting families baking cookies, decorating the tree, making popcorn garlands, or building gingerbread houses. These are the little moments that make the season so special.

Here are a few things I’ve learned while photographing families during the holidays:

  • Focus on the moment, not the pose. Some of my favorite shots are kids laughing with frosting on their hands or parents sneaking tastes of cookie dough.

  • Document the activities. Instead of trying to stage a perfect shot, I love capturing the process: rolling dough, hanging ornaments, or wrapping gifts together.

  • Keep it relaxed. When families wear comfortable clothes or pajamas, everyone feels more natural—and those genuine smiles shine through.

  • Capture movement. Twirling around the living room, tossing confetti, or dancing in front of the tree brings photos to life.

  • Use natural light. I try to photograph near windows or under warm ambient lighting—it adds a cozy, authentic feel.

  • Don’t forget the details. I love close-ups of tiny hands dusted with flour, glowing lights, or hot cocoa mugs—it’s the little things that tell the story.

  • Embrace imperfection. A messy gingerbread house or a crooked ornament isn’t a mistake—it’s a memory you’ll look back on and smile.

"When I shoot holiday sessions, my goal is always to capture memories, not just create pretty pictures. Those candid, joyful moments are what families remember years later—and they’re the ones I love documenting most," - Juli Trush-Pace.
